More visa loosening: China has expanded its visa-free transit program, which is available to visitors from 54 countries. The change extends the duration of visits under the program from a maximum of 144 hours up to 240 hours, or 10 days. It also allows people who arrive at more ports of entry to benefit from the program and allows them to travel to more parts of the country. China has been loosening visa requirements since the start of this year to attract more visitors and perk up its economy. Citizens of over three dozen countries have been granted visa waivers for trips of up to 30 days.

Tighter SOE rules: China’s State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission has issued new guidelines requiring central state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to incorporate market value management into executive performance assessments. The policy places an emphasis on boosting listed SOEs’ market performance through mergers and acquisitions, market-driven reforms and improved transparency. Key measures include strengthening core business competitiveness, fostering innovation and streamlining asset integration, while discouraging reckless expansions and financially unhealthy acquisitions. SOEs must also ensure sustainable dividend policies, increase payout frequencies and adopt a long-term share buyback mechanism to stabilize market expectations.

Easier digital payment: UnionPay International Co. Ltd. has partnered with WeChat Pay, enabling eight overseas digital wallets, including Hong Kong’s Octopus and South Korea’s Naver Pay, to scan WeChat Pay QR codes for payments in Chinese mainland, making mobile payments by foreign visitors simpler. The integration simplifies cross-border mobile payments, letting overseas digital wallet users pay in yuan with automatic currency conversion, making life easier for visitors from Hong Kong, Southeast Asia and South Korea. Additional wallets from Macau and other regions will be included in future expansions.

Urgent legal plea: TikTok has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to temporarily block a law that could ban the app in the country next month on national security grounds, unless it is sold. The Chinese-owned video platform asked the top court for an emergency injunction while they appeal a lower court’s decision to uphold the ban. The court had rejected TikTok’s argument that the law infringed on Americans’ right to free speech. The company said it was asking the Supreme Court to “apply the most rigorous scrutiny” to the law. On Monday, TikTok’s CEO met with President-elect Donald Trump, who confessed he had a “warm spot” in his heart for the app.

Fresh AI funding: Artificial intelligence (AI) unicorn Zhipu AI has raised 3 billion yuan ($411.8 million) in its second financing round this year, which has included several state-backed investors. The previous round, which valued the company at 20 billion yuan, also amounted to several billion yuan, sources said. Zhipu AI said that its total revenue more than doubled this year, it has over 700,000 corporate and development users, and its public-facing chatbot has over 25 million users. Over the summer, it launched AI-powered video generator Qingying, joining an already crowded and competitive sector in China.
